About Used IBCs

What is an IBC tote?

An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote is a reusable industrial container designed for storing and transporting bulk liquids, pastes, and granulated materials. Standard IBCs hold 275 or 330 gallons and consist of an HDPE (high-density polyethylene) inner bottle inside a steel cage, mounted on a pallet for easy forklift handling.

What is a composite IBC?

A composite IBC is a type of intermediate bulk container that combines an inner plastic bottle (typically HDPE) with an outer steel cage framework on a steel or plastic pallet. The term "composite" refers to the combination of these different materials. This is the most common type of IBC used in industry and is what we specialize in buying, selling, reconditioning, and transporting.

How long do used IBC totes last?

A well-maintained composite IBC tote can last 5 to 10 years or more, depending on the application and what materials are stored in it. The HDPE bottle is the component most likely to need replacement over time. The steel cage and pallet typically last much longer. Buying used IBCs that have been properly inspected and cleaned gives you years of reliable service at a fraction of the cost of new.

Are used IBC totes safe to use?

Yes, used IBC totes are safe when properly inspected, cleaned, and matched to the right application. Every IBC we sell goes through a thorough inspection process where we check the bottle for cracks, warping, and contamination, test the valve functionality, verify cage integrity, and ensure the pallet is structurally sound. We always recommend matching the IBC grade to your specific application — for example, using food-grade IBCs for food-related storage.

What is the difference between used, reconditioned, and rebottled IBCs?

Used IBCs have been previously filled and emptied, then cleaned and inspected for resale. Reconditioned IBCs go through a more thorough restoration process including new gaskets, valve inspection or replacement, pressure testing, and minor cage repairs. Rebottled IBCs receive a brand new HDPE bottle fitted into the existing cage — giving you a new interior with a proven frame. Each option offers a different balance of cost and condition.

Buying Used IBCs

How do I order used IBC totes?

Ordering is simple. You can request a quote through our contact form or email info@compositeibcs.com. Tell us what you need — size, quantity, condition, and intended use — and we will respond within 24 hours with pricing and availability. Once you approve the quote, we handle everything including scheduling delivery to your location.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No, there is no minimum order quantity. We sell individual IBCs as well as large bulk orders. However, we do offer volume discounts on orders of 10 or more units, with the best pricing available for full truckload orders (typically 56-60 IBCs per truck).

How much do used IBC totes cost?

Pricing for used IBC totes varies based on size, condition, quantity, and current market availability. Used IBCs typically cost 40-60% less than new containers. For the most accurate pricing, we recommend requesting a quote with your specific requirements. We provide transparent, competitive pricing with no hidden fees.

Do you offer bulk discounts?

Yes, we offer tiered bulk discounts. The more you order, the more you save. Discounts typically begin at 10 units, with additional savings at 25, 50, and full truckload quantities. Contact us with your volume needs and we will provide a custom bulk pricing quote.

How quickly can I receive my order?

Delivery time depends on your location and order size. For in-stock items, most orders ship within 1-3 business days. Standard delivery typically takes 3-7 business days depending on distance. Expedited and rush shipping options are available for urgent needs. We will provide estimated delivery dates when you receive your quote.

IBC Specifications

What sizes of IBC totes do you sell?

We primarily sell two standard sizes: 275 gallon (1,040 liters) and 330 gallon (1,249 liters) composite IBC totes. The 275 gallon is the most common and widely used size. The 330 gallon provides extra capacity for applications that require higher volume storage and transport.

What are the dimensions of a standard IBC tote?

A standard 275 gallon IBC tote measures approximately 48 inches long x 40 inches wide x 46 inches tall. A 330 gallon IBC measures approximately 48 inches long x 40 inches wide x 53 inches tall. The 48x40 inch footprint matches standard pallet sizes, making IBCs compatible with standard forklifts, pallet jacks, and warehouse racking systems.

How much does an IBC tote weigh?

An empty 275 gallon composite IBC typically weighs between 120-145 pounds, depending on the pallet type (steel pallets are heavier than plastic). A 330 gallon IBC weighs slightly more, typically 135-160 pounds empty. When full of water, a 275 gallon IBC weighs approximately 2,415 pounds and a 330 gallon weighs approximately 2,890 pounds.

What types of valves do IBC totes use?

The most common valve type is the 2-inch NPS (National Pipe Straight) butterfly valve, also known as a camlock valve. Other valve options include ball valves and gravity-feed valves. The outlet is located at the bottom of the IBC for gravity dispensing. The top fill opening is typically 6 inches (150mm) in diameter with a screw-on lid. We stock replacement valves for all standard IBC types.

What pallet types are available?

IBC totes come on either steel pallets or plastic (HDPE) pallets. Steel pallets are more durable and offer better stacking strength, making them ideal for heavy-duty and outdoor applications. Plastic pallets are lighter and resistant to corrosion, making them popular for food-grade and chemical applications. We carry both pallet types and can help you choose the right option for your needs.

Reconditioning & Cleaning

What does IBC reconditioning include?

Our reconditioning process includes thorough interior and exterior cleaning, valve inspection and replacement as needed, new gasket installation, pressure testing to verify integrity, cage straightening and minor repairs, label removal, and a final multi-point inspection. The result is an IBC that performs like new at a fraction of the cost.

How long does the reconditioning process take?

Standard reconditioning typically takes 2-5 business days per batch, depending on the quantity and condition of the IBCs being processed. If you need IBCs reconditioned on a rush basis, expedited service is available. Email us with your timeline and we will work to accommodate your schedule.

Can you recondition IBCs that held hazardous materials?

Yes, we can recondition IBCs that previously held many types of hazardous materials. Our cleaning process is designed to handle a wide range of chemical residues. However, some containers may not be suitable for reconditioning depending on the specific materials they held and the level of contamination. We evaluate each case individually and will advise you on the best course of action — whether that is reconditioning, rebottling, or disposal.

Do reconditioned IBCs come with any certification?

Yes, our reconditioned IBCs are processed to meet DOT and UN standards for reuse. Each reconditioned container is pressure tested and inspected according to regulatory requirements. We can provide documentation of the reconditioning process and test results upon request.

Can I send my own IBCs in for reconditioning?

Absolutely. We offer reconditioning services for customer-owned IBCs. You can arrange to have your containers shipped to our facility, or in many areas we can arrange pickup. Contact us with details about the quantity and condition of your IBCs and we will provide a reconditioning quote and logistics plan.

Parts & Accessories

What IBC parts and accessories do you sell?

We carry a full range of IBC parts and accessories including butterfly valves, ball valves, cam lock adapters, gaskets, lid caps, vented caps, steel cages, replacement pallets, IBC liners, heating blankets, insulation jackets, hose adapters, reducers, dust caps, and more. If you need a specific part, contact us and we can source it for you.

How do I know which parts are compatible with my IBC?

Most IBC parts follow standard sizing — 2-inch valves, 6-inch lid openings, and standard cage dimensions. However, some manufacturers use slightly different specifications. If you are unsure about compatibility, send us the brand and model of your IBC (usually printed on a label or stamped on the cage) and we will confirm which parts you need.

Can I order just the IBC cage or pallet separately?

Yes, we sell IBC cages and pallets as individual components. This is useful if you have a good bottle but the cage is damaged, or if you need a replacement pallet. We carry both steel and plastic pallets and standard-size steel cages. Contact us with the specifications of your IBC for pricing.

Do you sell IBC liners?

Yes, we stock disposable and reusable IBC liners in form-fit designs. Liners are ideal for preventing cross-contamination, protecting the inner bottle, and making cleanup easier. We offer food-grade liners for food and beverage applications, as well as standard liners for chemical and industrial use.

Pickup & Buyback

How does the IBC buyback program work?

Our buyback program is straightforward. If you have used or empty IBCs that you no longer need, we will buy them from you. Simply email us with the quantity, condition, and location of your IBCs. We will provide a buyback price, schedule a pickup at your facility, and pay you once the containers are received and inspected. It is an easy way to recover value from surplus containers.

What condition do IBCs need to be in for buyback?

We buy IBCs in various conditions — from clean, single-use containers to heavily used ones. The buyback price varies based on condition. IBCs that are clean, structurally sound, and have functioning valves command the highest prices. Even damaged or heavily soiled IBCs may have value for their cage, pallet, or recycling materials. Contact us to find out what your IBCs are worth.

Do you offer free pickup for used IBCs?

We offer free pickup in many areas, especially for larger quantities (typically 20 or more IBCs). For smaller quantities or remote locations, a pickup fee may apply. We also offer regularly scheduled pickup routes in many metro areas. Email us with your location and quantity for specific pickup terms.

How much can I get for my used IBCs?

Buyback pricing depends on several factors including the condition of the IBCs, the quantity available, your location, and current market conditions. Clean, single-use IBCs in good structural condition typically command the best prices. Contact us with details about your IBCs and we will provide a fair buyback offer within 24 hours.

Do you buy IBCs in any condition?

Yes, we buy IBCs in virtually any condition. Clean, lightly used containers bring the best prices, but we also purchase damaged, heavily used, or contaminated IBCs. Even if a tote is too damaged for reuse, the cage, pallet, and materials often have recycling value. Email us with photos and details for a buyback quote.

Shipping & Delivery

How are IBC totes shipped?

IBC totes are shipped via flatbed or enclosed freight trucks. They are loaded with forklifts and secured for transport. A standard 53-foot truck can carry approximately 56-60 empty IBCs. How long does delivery take?

Delivery times vary based on your location and order size. Most in-stock orders ship within 1-3 business days. Standard LTL freight delivery takes 3-7 business days. Full truckload orders may have slightly different timelines. We provide estimated delivery dates with every quote and offer expedited shipping options for urgent needs.

Do you provide tracking information?

Yes, we provide tracking information for all shipments. Once your order ships, you will receive a tracking number and carrier information via email. You can use this to monitor your shipment in real time and plan for receiving at your facility.

Do you deliver to all 50 states?

Yes, we deliver used IBC totes to all 50 states. We work with a network of freight carriers to provide reliable, cost-effective delivery nationwide. Shipping costs vary by location and order size. Email us with your ZIP code for a delivery quote.

Can you arrange transport for IBCs I already own?

Yes, we offer transport services for customer-owned IBCs. Whether you need to move containers between your own facilities, ship them to us for reconditioning, or have them picked up for buyback, we can arrange reliable freight transport.
