IBC adapters are the essential link between your composite IBC tote and the rest of your fluid handling system. Because IBCs use specialized coarse threads — most commonly the S60x6 standard — you need the right adapter to connect to standard plumbing, hoses, pumps, and other containers. Our comprehensive adapter catalog covers every common conversion: S60x6 to NPT (National Pipe Thread) in sizes from 1/2" to 3", S60x6 to BSP (British Standard Pipe) for international equipment compatibility, S60x6 to garden hose thread for basic dispensing and washdown, and S60x6 to cam-lock quick-connect fittings for rapid hose attachment in industrial settings. We also stock a full range of reducers, allowing you to step down from a 2" IBC outlet to smaller pipe sizes for metering pumps, flow meters, or precision dispensing nozzles. Hose barb adapters provide a secure, clamp-ready connection for flexible tubing in sizes from 1/2" to 2". Every adapter is available in three material options: polypropylene for general-purpose chemical and water applications, brass for petroleum products and compressed-air systems, and 316 stainless steel for food-grade, pharmaceutical, and high-temperature environments. All threaded connections include appropriate gaskets and O-ring seals, and our adapters are designed with hex flats or knurled grips for easy wrench or hand-tightening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thread does my IBC tote have?

The most common IBC outlet thread worldwide is the S60x6, a 60 mm diameter coarse thread with a 6 mm pitch. This thread is standard on Schuetz, Mauser, Greif, and most other composite IBC manufacturers. Some older or specialty IBCs may use DIN 61, S75x6, or 2" NPT/BSP outlets. To verify, check the markings stamped near the outlet or measure the outer thread diameter with calipers.

What is the difference between NPT and BSP threads?

NPT (National Pipe Thread) is the standard pipe thread used in North America. It features a tapered thread that creates a seal by wedging together. BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the standard used in Europe, Asia, Australia, and most of the rest of the world. BSP parallel threads (BSPP) seal with a gasket or O-ring, while BSP tapered threads (BSPT) seal like NPT. NPT and BSP threads are not interchangeable — using the wrong adapter will result in a poor seal or cross-threading.

Can I connect a garden hose to my IBC tote?

Yes. We offer S60x6 to garden hose thread (GHT) adapters that allow you to connect a standard 3/4" garden hose directly to your IBC. These adapters are popular for gravity-fed irrigation, rainwater dispensing, livestock watering, and general washdown applications. For better flow control, pair the adapter with an inline garden hose shut-off valve.

Which material should I choose for my adapter?

Polypropylene is the most economical choice and works well for water, mild chemicals, soaps, and most aqueous solutions. Brass is ideal for petroleum products, oils, compressed air, and applications requiring higher pressure ratings. Stainless steel (316 grade) is the best choice for food-grade products, pharmaceuticals, aggressive chemicals, and high-temperature applications above 200°F. Always verify chemical compatibility with the specific product you are handling.

Do I need thread sealant tape with IBC adapters?

For tapered thread connections (NPT), PTFE thread sealant tape is recommended to achieve a leak-free seal. For parallel thread connections (BSP, S60x6) that use gaskets or O-rings, thread tape is generally not needed and can actually prevent the gasket from seating correctly. Our adapters include the appropriate sealing gasket for the connection type, so in most cases you can install hand-tight with no additional sealant.
